Potential service disruptions at Direct Energy

Potential service disruptions at Direct Energy add to company's consumer relations problems OTTAWA, March 19, 2012 /CNW/ - Ontario's Direct Energy's controversy over water heater rental contracts have been complicated by potential service disruptions resulting from contract negotiations with their workforce. About 550 full-time and part-time members of Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Local 975, representing both clerical and operational employees, have given their bargaining committee an overwhelming strike mandate. The CEP members provide plumbing, water heater, heating, ventilation and air conditioning Read More...

Direct Energy reverses decision on negative-option contract changes

TORONTO – Media reports and public outcry has led Direct Energy to reverse a set of contract revisions just days after introducing them. In the past month letters had been mailed out to customers of Direct Energy informing them of the contract change. The letter explained that on April 2nd, customers would be locked into a new agreement, that would force them pay for their old water tank if they want it removed. It would also apply to anyone who Read More...

The History of Air Conditioning and Air Conditioners

In 1902, only one year after Willis Haviland Carrier graduated from Cornell University with a Masters in Engineering, the first air (temperature and humidity) conditioning was in operation, making one Brooklyn printing plant owner very happy. Fluctuations in heat and humidity in his plant had caused the dimensions of the printing paper to keep altering slightly, enough to ensure a misalignment of the colored inks. The new air conditioning machine created a stable environment and aligned four-color printing became Read More...

The Nest Learning Thermostat‎

There’s no new traditional must-have tech gift this holiday season. Most geeks already have an iPad, a laptop, big-screen TV, an Xbox. What about a thermostat? Programmable thermostats have been been on the market for years, but they are as fun to program as early VCRs. Now, Tony Fadell, who played a big role with creating iPods for Apple, is using his design skills with the Nest thermostat. Because traditional thermostats are so hard to program, few people adjust the temperature to Read More...

Green energy proves costly for all of us

Dalton McGuinty constantly extols the virtues of so-called green energy. One North Bay company, however, is sounding the alarm that the costs of this expensive program are forcing companies to lay off staff -- and will eventually force many of them to leave the province. John Spencer is an executive with Fabrene Inc., a company that makes industrial fabrics. The Liberal government's green energy plan has added $1 million a year to his hydro bill -- an amount he says will eventually Read More...

A catch in Direct Energy’s new ‘terms’

Direct Energy found a way in 2010 to protect itself from other waterheater providers who were luring away its customers in droves. Any Direct Energy customer with a new rental installed from September 2010 and on was switched over to a new "service" agreement. The agreement comes with a few perks, including guaranteed service within 24 hours if customers are having hot water problems. If Direct Energy can't meet that guarantee, the customer's rental fee is waived for the next month. But Read More...
