Enbridge Warning Tag

An Enbridge warning tag, often called a red tag, is put on a water heater or furnace by a licensed technician to show that the piece of equipment is no longer safe to operate.

The most common reason for a furnace or water heater to receive an Enbridge warning tag is because of a carbon monoxide leak. If a licensed technician detects that there is a defective heat exchanger then they are obligated to place an Enbridge warning tag on the equipment as it can cause serious health issues for the homeowner and family using the equipment. A defective heat exchanger can release carbon monoxide which is a colourless and odourless gas capable of causing life threatening health complications. If this is the case then the carbon monoxide gas can easily mix with the air in the household through the vents in your home.

As a means of protection and prevention, an Enbridge warning tag is placed on your water heater or furnace and the natural gas in your home will be shut off by the utility company. The certified gas technician who is inspecting your equipment is required by law to place an Enbridge warning tag on your equipment if it is deemed as an safety concern.

The two types of Enbridge warning tags

A warning tagAn “A” warning tag means that the technician has found a carbon monoxide leak which means that your equipment is considered to be an immediate danger. Your water heater or furnace will then be red tagged/warning tagged and the utility company will be notified to shut off the natural gas in your home.

B warning tagA “B” warning tag means that your water heater or furnace is not an immediate danger and you will be given 35 days to repair or replace your equipment. If the equipment is not replaced or repaired within this time frame then the utility company will shut off the natural gas to your home.

In order to prevent receiving an Enbridge warning tag in the future, it is helpful to perform annual maintenance checks on your natural gas equipment. A certified technician would be able to spot a problem in advance of it actually becoming a problem and save you the unnecessary cost of Enbridge warning tag removal. Annual maintenance checks are a great precaution to take in order to avoid any problems regarding your HVAC equipment. Our HVAC specialists at DeMark Home Ontario would be glad to be the simple solution you need.

If your natural gas equipment received an Enbridge warning tag, it is crucially important that you contact a licensed contractor to inspect your equipment and rid your home of such problems. Often times the equipment can be repaired, but in others a replacement is the best or only solution. An electrical, water, or natural gas problem must be dealt with using serious care and expertise, which is why it can only be done by a licensed and experienced technician.
