Repair or Upgrade to High Efficiency Furnace in Toronto and GTA

Repair or Upgrade to High Efficiency Furnace. Don’t throw your money away

Most likely If you are reading this article and if you live in Toronto or GTA, your HVAC system, furnace or air conditioner previously gave you problems or even not functioning properly at this moment. We are approaching the winter season and many Ontario and Toronto homeowners already started to get ready for the cold season by scheduling maintenance and service calls for their furnaces to ensure it will not let them down during cold months. One of the main concerns that many homeowners have on their minds is whether to service and repair their old system or to upgrade it to a new High Efficiency furnace. In this article, we will try to help you make the right choice for your home and get ready for the cold winter season.

Firstly, let us focus on some specifications of the HVAC systems. Every furnace is designed to last anywhere between 12-20 years on average based on the manufactory and maintenance. Typically there are two main reasons why you would want to upgrade your HVAC system. First, your furnace is not working or not functioning properly or you got a red tag from your local gas utility i.e Enbridge which indicates furnace malfunction. Second reason, your furnace is old and your energy bills are becoming too expensive to tolerate.  In both of these scenarios you have to take a look at the cost of the repair and maintenance and the efficiency of the old HVAC system.

  • If your furnace is younger than 8 years and the cost of repair was estimated under $400 then the repair may be the right solution for you depending on the condition of your HVAC system
  • If you furnace us younger than 8 years and the cost of repair was estimated over $500 then replacement to a new energy efficient furnace might be the optimal solution
  • If your furnace is younger than 10 years and needs repairs then the upgrade to a new high energy efficient furnace may be the best solution
  • If your furnace is younger than 10 years and functions properly without causing any problems then you might want to wait with the upgrade for a few years but we strongly recommend to having annual maintenance done preventing any costly repairs.
  • If your furnace is older than 10-12 years then it is time to think about the replacement to a new energy efficient HVAC system to prevent any costly repairs and high energy bills especially if your current system is a mid efficiency furnace that vents combustion gases through a chimney.

Here are some simple calculations of furnace efficiency levels that will speak for themselves. When your furnace was installed years ago, your mid efficiency furnace was about 75 % -80 % efficient, you can also refer to the yellow sticker on your equipment for the exact efficiency level. Every year mid efficiency furnaces lose approx. 1. 5% -2 % of its efficiency based on the annual tune ups. Simple math, 1.5 % multiplied by 10 years-your furnace lost 15 % of its original efficiency, 2 % multiplied by 10 years- your furnace efficiency already decreased to 55%. Furnaces can lose its efficiency and operate at as low as

50 % of its original efficiency level. This means that out of $100 that you spent on heating, only $55 goes towards heating your home and the rest $45 goes out to your chimney. Moreover, average household spends up to $1500 a year on heating and if your furnace is old and low in efficiency then you are throwing away up to $675 a year. In addition, many homeowners chose to pay protection plans in the amount of $10 – $35 per month in case the furnace breaks. Let’s calculate your total losses, $700, $800 and maybe even up to $1,000 a year! Are you shocked??? There is an affordable solution.

New High Efficiency furnaces reach up to 96 % – 98 % efficiency level due to the new technologies and do not lose its efficiency as much as you old furnaces, except for a very small percentage when they are not serviced regularly. Most of these heating systems come with a 10 year warranty on parts and labour and some even have a lifetime unit replacement warranty. You will no longer have to pay for any protection plans as your furnace already comes with warranty and the difference between 55 % and 96 % efficient furnace is 46 %. This means that your energy and maintenance savings can be up to $1,120 a year.

If you are ready or considering to upgrade your furnace to a high energy efficient model, you have to consider the size and the efficiency level that is optimal for your home as this will affect the level of furnace efficiency.
