Should I replace both furnace and air conditioner at the same time? Toronto, GTA, Ontario.

Furnaces and Air Conditioners like any other home appliances have wear and tear period and must be replaced periodically.

Typical lifespan of an air conditioner or a furnace is on average 15 years.  When the time comes to upgrade it if it is no longer functioning properly or you are looking to get higher efficiency equipment, homeowners face a dilemma whether they should replace both units at the same time or have furnace and air conditioner upgraded separately. There are few factors that any homeowner should take into consideration before making this decision.

Age of the equipment

If your home is under 15 years most likely both furnace and air conditioner are about the same age and were installed at the same time. Both units are going to wear down in about the same time. If you are replacing furnace you probably want to upgrade your AC as well. If your home is on the older side, the chances are that your Air Conditioner is older then your furnace. Licensed technician would be able to determine approximate age of your equipment. If you are replacing your old AC and your furnace is only 5 years of age, it doesn’t make sense to upgrade it at the same time.

Save money

New furnaces and air conditioners are high efficiency technology and will function to the highest efficiency and give you the most saving when installed together. If you replace your Air conditioner but your furnace is mid efficiency, it will not give you the most saving on energy consumption. Replacing both units at the same time will ensure the most savings on your energy bills. You will also save on the installation of the equipment when installing both furnace and AC at the same time as installing each unit separately will cost more and you will miss out on bundle savings.

Save Time

Replacing both furnace and Air conditioner at the same time will save you a lot of time and energy. You can have both units installed in one day and save the hassle of searching, scheduling and waiting for the installation to take place. If it is time for your furnace and AC to get upgraded do not wait until the other unit breaks, get it done at the same time.
