How to avoid furnace repairs during home renovations

Following these easy and simple steps will prevent you from furnace repairs during home renovations.

Almost every homeowner knows high costs of furnace repairs or replacement. One thing many people don’t realize is that while they’re trying to improve their homes with renovations they can be doing damage to their furnace heating system at the same time. Regardless of whether it’s a small or large project, renovating or remodeling a home is dirty work. When planning home remodeling or renovations keep in mind your heating and cooling system need to be properly taken care of to prevent any furnace repairs and further equipment problems.

Dust and dirt are two of the most harmful substances that can invade your furnace. During a home renovation or remodeling project, the amount of dust and dirt generated is quite significant. Drywall dust and dust from other cut materials can be very fine and infiltrate your furnace and lead to permanent damage or very expensive furnace repairs.

One of the best ways in avoiding furnace repairs when renovating your home is to keep your HVAC system off, if and when possible. Also, closing vents and registers will prevents dust from entering your duct system and lingering in your ductwork.

Check your filters and clean them as needed when too much debris and dirt are collected. Checking it regularly to ensure proper airflow is important, and overall changing the air filter is a fairly inexpensive thing to do. Furnace filters need to be changed every 30 to 90 days however they may need to be replaced as often as weekly during home renovations.

Do as much cutting and sanding outside or in a garage to keep the mess out of your home. It’s also a good idea to try to vacuum as much as possible during your renovation, so you can combat the dust as much as possible so it doesn’t infiltrate your HVAC system and cause furnace repairs and replacement.
