Natural Gas prices increase, time to upgrade to high efficiency furnace in Ontario
Finally the cold and long winter is over and homeowners in Ontario can get a relief from frigid temperatures and high heating costs. But the bad news in Ontario is natural gas prices increased as of April 1, 2014. Due to high demand for natural gas in the winter, spot market prices went up and caused utilities to apply to Ontario Energy Board to increase prices for all homeowners in Ontario. Homeowner’s energy bills are to increase on average $400 per year.
Those customers in Toronto and Ontario whose heating systems are mid efficiency furnaces and older units will see even higher increase to their energy bills as the efficiency of mid efficiency furnaces decreases over time. Moreover customers with old inefficient hot water heaters also will be spending more money to get hot water in their homes due to the increased natural gas rates. Prices for natural gas are set every quarter and there are many talks that coming July 1 Ontario will experience another price increase.
