Signs that you need a new hot water tank

There are few indicators that your hot water tank needs to be replaced.

Hot water tank is something that homeowners don’t think about too often unless it is causing problems and you are stuck without hot water. It is sitting in your utility room and you don’t come across it too often but if you are left without hot water the problem cannot be ignored. Most hot water heaters last anywhere between 10 to 15 years and if you are within hot water tank lifespan maybe it is time to think of the replacement before it is too late. After 10 years your old water heater is likely starting to deteriorate and could cause problems if not replaced in time.

Your hot water tank is old

Most hot water heaters need to be replaced every 10 years for a proper operations and higher energy efficiency. If you moved into a new home or are not sure of the age of your water tank you can try to check it on the rating plate of the unit or call a professional who can check the unit’s age. Generally water heaters can start causing problems when they pass its lifespan so don’t wait until it is too late call a professional and request a water heater upgrade.

No hot water

If your water heater is not producing hot water and it is not doing its job. Firstly you should check pilot light on your hot water tank to make sure it is lit. If pilot light is operating properly but there is still no hot water then you need to call a professional who can assess the problem and provide you with the options wither to repair or replace the unit. Repairing your old water heater may not be worth it based on the repair cost and age of the equipment so consider what is best for your home needs and budget.

Water Tank is Leaking

If your hot water tank is leaking then this is an obvious sign that it needs to be replaced. General wear and tear, rust and deposits could cause seams in your water heater and bottom of the tank to leak. If the leak is coming from the top of the hot water heater then it might be plumbing issue on your water lines however if water heater is leaking from the bottom it is obvious sign that it needs to be replaced. If you also notice water pooling under your water heater and in the utility room do not wait to replace it and call for service immediately. It is also not uncommon for hot water heaters to blow their bottoms out fully and cause major flooding to your basement.

Normal wear and tear, rust and corrosion

Water heaters are designed to last for the length of their warranty however many homeowners hold to their old unit for much longer period. Overtime water heaters can rust inside and you will notice slight orange rust colouring or even rusty taste in your hot water. Since the issue is coming from inside your hot

water tank the only solution is to replace it to a new unit which will eliminate normal wear and tear issues.

Not enough hot water

If your family is growing and you notice that you are constantly running out of hot water and your tank is not providing sufficient supply of hot water for your daily needs, consider replacing it with a bigger size or tankless hot water heater on demand. Sometimes you don’t have to wait until your hot water heater fails before considering the replacement.
