InactiveI need Help,
For some reason this year my air conditioner is not producing enough
cold air to cool the upstairs of my house. When I go to the ground
floor there is enough cold air coming out, and it’s nice and cold, but
upstairs, it’s too hot. I try to lower the thermostat to 70 degrees,
and cool air comes out of the vents on the upstairs, but for some
reason, the house is not cooling down enough to make the thermostat
shut off. What’s the most likely culprit? Thanks

MemberHeat rises. Close off the upstairs by hanging blankets over the stairwell.

My first suggestion would be that you need to recharge the freon but if the freon level is right then the whole unit might be worn out. How old is it? I suggest call a tech to come out and look at it, as the unit needs to be serviced every couple of years

First off, have you got any cold air return registers upstairs? If yes are they working? Take some toilet paper and with the ac fan on the toilet paper should suck against and attach to the grill. The cold air registers play an important part in heating and cooling.
In my previous house I found that it took several days before the upstairs got to its cool point early in the season. I also shut down most of the lower floor registers to allow most of the cool air to be pushed upstairs as it will migrate down to the lower levels.

MemberMost likely you need to have your air conditioner replaced to a bigger size or possibly you got air in your lines which needs to be vacuumed out but it will also cost you to change freon as they normally vacume out air and freona and then refill freon back which costs $200 approx
