Central Air conditioner Refrigerant R-22 or R-410A

When looking for a new AC for your home, be aware that there are two kinds of central air conditioner refrigerant to choose from, which are the R-22 or R410A refrigerants.

There is one notable difference between these two types of central air conditioner refrigerant and that is their price. The price for the R-22 refrigerant has been steadily increasing for some time now and it seems as though it will only keep getting more and more expensive. As a consumer you should be paying attention to the type of refrigerant that an air conditioner uses and make your best effort to avoid ones which use an R-22 refrigerant. We’ll tell you why to avoid this device and how to make an informed decision as a customer.

The R-22 central air conditioner refrigerant should be avoided at all costs as they are slowly being phased out of production in the industry. By 2020, the R-22 will no longer be produced or imported due to its harmful effects on the earth’s ozone layer.

Why should this matter to you?

If you happen to have an air conditioner which uses the R-22 refrigerant and the refrigerant at some point has a leak, it will either be extremely expensive to replace the refrigerant or simply impossible to get a hold of a new one. Currently manufacturers are limiting the quantity of this refrigerant that is being sold, making it already difficult to obtain.

How to know the difference

If you want to know which kind of central air conditioner refrigerant your AC unit uses, you can look at the label located on the compressor unit. The recommended and newer type of refrigerant should be labelled as R-410A, while the older type that you should avoid will either be labelled R-22 or HCFC-22.

What to do If your AC uses an R-22 refrigerant

The best thing you can do if your AC unit uses an R-22 is to contact your local HVAC contractor and request for them to tune up your system which will greatly reduce the chances of experiencing a leakage. Getting a system tune-up will extend the life of your home’s air conditioning system and reduce any future repair or replacement costs.
