5 Common Reasons for Having No Hot Water

Having no hot water at home makes a lot of everyday tasks very troublesome, so here are some things to consider if you find yourself in this unpleasant situation.

Turning on your tap or shower and finding no hot water can have you concerned about the root cause of this annoying problem. Is your water tank leaking? Do you have a natural gas leak? Here are the 5 most common reasons for why you may have no hot water in your home.

  1. Natural Gas Leakage

A natural gas leak in your home can be very dangerous! A natural gas leak can cause potential fires and inhaling the gas can lead to natural gas poisoning. If you believe that there’s been a gas leak in your home, call your natural gas provider immediately to come inspect the issue. Your natural gas provider should be able to fix the leak if you do happen to have one.

  1. Water Tank Leak

A leaking water tank can be a serious issue. A water heater with a bad leak will leave no water in the tank to be heated, which is why you’re experiencing cold water coming from your tap or shower. To check if your tank is leaking, examine the connections between the water heater and its pipes and valves. If they are secure, the next step is to check the tank’s compartment. If there’s water in the compartment, it’s safe to say that it’s time to replace your old water heater.

  1. Faulty Gas Valve

A faulty gas valve can often be what’s responsible for having no hot water in your home. Check that your gas valve is secure and in the right place. Now you can make sure that the gas is turned on. If the gas valve seems good, inspect the pilot light. Re-light the pilot light (this could take several attempts) and make sure it stays lit. If the pilot light doesn’t stay lit, the gas line could be what’s the root of the issue.

  1. Undersized water heater

Having a tank that’s the right size for your household is crucial to your home comfort and energy efficiency. A hot water tank that’s too small for your household’s needs will leave you running out of hot water on a regular basis. Constantly running out of hot water is a clear indicator that it’s time to upgrade to a larger water heater.

Tankless units are a leading option for many homeowners as they provide you with unlimited hot water on demand and save space in your house with their compact size.

  1. Defective Thermostat

Professionals recommend that you keep your water heater set at a temperature between 130 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit. This is to ensure that you always have hot water and also remain energy efficient. If you’re experiencing a lack of hot water, look into the upper thermostat. If your thermostat is broken or malfunctioning, it needs to be replaced. If your water heater hasn’t been regularly maintained, issues can persist even with a working thermostat. Unmaintained water heaters develop sediment buildup which needs to be flushed in order for the appliance to work properly again.
