Ways to save money on your heating bill

Heating your home can be very expensive so we want to give you some tips to save money on your heating bill.

Enjoy the comfort of your home this winter season and see savings on your heating bill.

Upgrade your furnace – The easiest way to save money on your heating bills is by replacing to a high efficiency furnace. Technology has improved a lot in the past years so any heating equipment 10 years or older is worth replacing to an energy efficient model.

Furnace and Fireplace Maintenance – Regular maintenance keeps your furnace and fireplace operating at highest efficiency possible translating into direct savings on your heating bill. Change your furnace filter at least every 90 days and perform annual furnace and fireplace maintenance for higher savings.

Home Insulation – Measure the level of insulation in your home including attic, basement and attic entrance. Attic insulation level should be about 14 inches and about 10 inches in your basement. Add more insulation to your home to keep the heat in and see decrease in your heating bill.

Programmable thermostat – Using programmable thermostat helps you to save on your energy bills every hour. Did you know that by lowering your home temperature just by 1 degree for 7 hours a day saves you 1 % on your heating bill? With programmable thermostat you can lower your home temperature while sleeping or at work. You can set a detailed schedule for your furnace using a programmable thermostat. With Wi-Fi thermostat you can even control your home temperature from anywhere in the world.

Keep the heat in your home – Spend money heating inside your home and not the surrounding area. Do everything that you can to keep the heat from escaping your home. Here are some things you should do: weather-strip your doors and calk the windows, seal electrical boxes on the outside walls and tape any air leaks in the ducting system to keep the heat in.

Natural Solar Heat – Keeping your curtain and blinds open during the sunny days on the sunny side of the house bring the natural solar heat to your home. But don’t forget o close the drapes when the sun goes down to keep the heat inside as much as possible. Heat can escape even through the most energy efficient windows so keeping blinds and drapes closed when is gets dark will limit the thermal transfer.

Heat only the space you need – To save even more on your heating bill try to heat only the space you use in your home. Close vents and doors in the room that you are not using in your home to redirect the heat to the rooms you need. You can also use supplement heating from fireplace, wood stove or even a portable electric heater. Keeping an unused basement at a base temperature also helps to keep the floors above warm. And we know that warm feet allow for lower temperatures.

Put warm clothing on – There is no reason for you to wear a winter jacket around the home but putting on warm and comfy sweater, pants and socks allows for lower temperatures in the home. Keep blankets in the common area so you can enjoy watching TV feeling warm and cozy.
